Kevin James Dobson, director

I recently received an email regarding the death of Australian film and television director Kevin James Dobson, who played an integral role in the development of film and television drama in this country. The email, from a family member, included a well-written obituary that I enjoyed reading. But the question was: Could I arrange to have this obituary published? It definitely needed to be published, considering Dobson’s impact and legacy on the entertainment industry.

Finding a home for an obituary is a bit of a trick that I am still learning. As a freelancer, I have very little influence, although I can suggest subjects to my editors and, depending on their news agenda, they may say ‘yes’ (or no). Sadly, I have no idea what their agenda is!

However, in this instance, it seems that my suggestion to try contacting the Sydney Morning Herald obituaries desk worked! The same obit has also been published in their sister paper, The Age. The obit was also published by IF.com.au and the story was covered by other news organisations, including at least one in the UK, where Dobson was born.

I am so pleased to see that it has been published. His story is one we can all learn something from. I know I learned something and I know you will too! It also had me reminiscing about some of my favourite programs from back in the day.

It was the creative innovators of the past, like Dobson and his work, who helped form the Australian film and television industry into what it is today and for that, they should not be overlooked!
